Periodontal Disease Bacteria Disarms Immune System

Denver, Colorado-You may not realize that you have more bacterial cells than human cells in your body. Most bacterial cells help in the day-to-day upkeep of one’s immune system. However, illnesses such as periodontal disease can cause an imbalance in these bacteria, leading to a weaker immune system.

A study conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania concluded that the bacteria associated with gum disease not only hampers the killing ability of the immune cells, but also allows them to cause gum inflammation.

As pointed out by Denver periodontist Emilio Arguello, gum inflammation can often be the first sign of periodontal disease.

“Gingivitis can make the gum tissue appear red or swollen,” says Dr. Arguello. “As long as you dedicate yourself to regular brushing and flossing, gingivitis goes away on its own. Ignoring your gums in this situation can lead to major problems.”

Once the bacteria works its way down your tooth, the bone and inside lining of the gum are destroyed. A deepened space called a periodontal pocket then forms between the gum and tooth. Seeing an experienced periodontist at this stage is crucial to getting back your periodontal health.

“We’ll examine how much bone loss has occurred,” explains Dr. Arguello. “Then we can develop a treatment plan. Usually, it involves a combination of scaling, root planing and pocket reduction.”

In simple terms, scaling removes the buildup of plaque and calculus. Root planing smoothes the root surface, while a pocket reduction (or gingivectomy) eliminates excess gum tissue.

Going back to the study, our team at Altura Periodontics is encouraged that the results could open up new avenues for periodontal treatment. But for now, we want to make sure you understand the preventive care required to avoid this nasty disease.

“It’s amazing that maintaining basic oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing can decrease your risk of heart disease or stroke in the future,” says Dr. Arguello. “There’s no question that periodontal disease in its later stages can deteriorate a person’s overall health.”
